Seeking a quiet retreat to deepen into the Creative Flow and focus on my personal project, I followed winding dirt roads further into the rural north of Phú Quốc and arrived here—a rustic, earthy little resort. A barefoot escape, a place to slow down for a few days and connect with her essence beyond the surface impressions most visitors see.
This is my fifth visit to the island, and this time, I’ve been here for over a month. Yet, it feels like I’m only beginning to know her. Phú Quốc reveals herself in layers, much like a living, breathing being—one that has witnessed both reverence and exploitation.
A Land of Contrasts
Phú Quốc often carries a reputation for reckless development, where once-pristine wilderness has been sacrificed for grand projects. From five-star resorts and luxury apartments to copycat towns modeled after foreign destinations, the island has undergone aggressive transformation. The natural environment bears the weight of this change—pollution and mass deforestation.
Yet, despite this, Phú Quốc remains rich in untamed beauty. The island is about the same size as Ibiza and slightly smaller than Singapore, yet it is blessed with two rivers, both originating from the jungle, bringing life to the land.
The seasonal winds shape its climate, but they also carry in waves of debris, turning the island into an unfortunate collection point for waste from neighboring countries and the mainland. The beachfront resorts, while privatizing much of the coastline, do play a role in cleaning up the shores—a paradox of destruction and preservation.
The Island’s Telluric Energy
Despite human impact and rapid development, Phú Quốc still hums with a deep, grounding, and nourishing energy. The island sits on an ancient continental shelf and is geologically linked to the Chanthaburi Volcanic Arc, a formation that extends across Hà Tiên, Thailand, and Cambodia. Its mineral-rich land carries a potent telluric energy, amplified by the surrounding sea—water, after all, is a powerful conductor.
Sadly, concrete is disrupting this natural balance. Like a song played through layers of noise, this energy is becoming harder to hear. The weight of overdevelopment is dulling the vibrancy the land once carried so effortlessly. Yet for those willing to venture beyond the built-up areas, deeper into nature, her pulse is still there, waiting to be felt.
A Call to Connect with the Island’s Spirit
To truly connect with Phú Quốc, one must go beyond the surface. Step away from the tourist hubs. Walk barefoot on her earth. Feel the wind. Hike through the jungle. Paddle along her rivers. Her spirit is still here, waiting for those who seek her with reverence.
Maybe one day, I will guide a retreat here—a journey to reconnect with the island’s true essence, to experience her energy undisturbed, and to honour her spirit.
For now, I remain deeply grateful—to have walked her lands and listened, to receive, and to share what I have learned.
